Which comes first, the logo or your Company name on a pylon sign panel?
Have you ever rented space in a:
- Local strip mall?
- Retail location?
- Neighborhood shopping center?
Or do you plan on doing so?
If you are, then you will notice that each type of retail center will most likely have a huge main pylon pole sign or a few smaller ones facing the roadways to inform drivers on what types of business are open here.
A main pylon pole sign is that large double-sided sign you see at that entry to these types of centers. Where each tenant is allotted a certain amount of space to add their logo, business name or both on the pylon sign face.
The amount of space you are allotted will depend on how much retail space you’re renting. You will quickly see that the larger tenant(s) will get the most amount of allocated sign space on the center pylon sign(s).
The larger tenant is usually a big box retailer, grocery store or major brand. And they usually take up the most amount of sign space at the top of the pylon.
This leaves the smaller tenants with a lot less room to advertise their business name or service on the sign face. Which leads us back to the question of, “which comes first, a logo or company name?“
Which means, you have a choice. (Assuming you’re not the big box retailer or major tenant). Do you place your company name or logo or both in the smaller area on the main pylon sign?
The reason you may want to think about this before moving forward and getting your name up in lights, so to speak, is because the smaller space you’re allotted on the pylon sign gets really small from a distance real quick.
For example: A well-known brand has the luxury to simply place their logo on the sign and you or I will know exactly who they are and what they offer, almost instantly. Right?
Whereas a small service business, a new mom and pop restaurant or a unique retail outlet may not be all that well-known, yet.
Which means you have a choice.
- Do you add your logo and your company name?
- Do you just add your name?
- Or do you only add your logo?
So what’s the purpose of this release?
We simply want to help you understand, that if you want to get noticed and you’re unknown that it may be best to simply “state or say” what you do in the small allotted space on the pylon sign.
For example: Let’s assume you’re name is Betty, and you’re opening up a new chic hair salon. And you’re offering a lot of services such as hair styling, nails, extensions, facials, pedicures and product… And you’re open from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily. And you have a phone number to book appointments…
Some of us may be tempted to place all of this information, even a cool logo, in the small allotted space on the main pylon pole sign. As some actually do?
Which begs to answer the question” which comes first the logo or a company name” or maybe neither? Say what?
Which means if you want to be seen, would it not make sense to decide on placing only your company-name in this small allotted ad space on the pylon sign? Such as ”Betty’s Hair Salon”? Rather than adding a logo, all the other services, a phone number and your hours of operation…
In the photo above, do you see how small some of these tenant panel signs really are?
Whereas, the well-known brands will simply stand out (because we recognize their logo’s, colors and automatically know what they offer) even if they are in a small panel space.
That being shared, you want to consider readability first. For instance, in “Betty’s Hair Salon” example, you probably know it’s a hair salon because it’s easy to read? And that’s more important than listing everything you do that will not be seen by some one strolling or driving-by.
Can you imagine, in the example, if Betty decided to drop her name from the ‘tenant panel’ and made it nice a short like “Hair Salon”? WOW! Now that would let drivers-by quickly notice exactly what Betty does. Don’t yah think?
Sometimes uncommon sense can make more sense than common sense. Would you leave your name off a small tenant panel if you knew ‘what you do’ is instantly readable?
It’s your turn now. Which comes first, the logo or the name? You decide. And maybe you’ll make better use of your allotted space on the main pylon sign(s) at your local strip center today.
Plus, if you add-in a different background color, like red with white copy you’ll be seen even more rather than simply placing your color of lettering on a white background, like everyone else.
It’s something to think about…
What do you think? Which came first “the logo or company name”? What will you decide?
Another example: If we were opening up a new unknown small Sign Company today? We would decide to simply place the word “Signs” on the main tenant panel(s) on the pylon sign(s). This makes the message simple, crisp and easy to grasp… so potential clients would know ‘what we do‘.
Is this information starting to make more sense? Do you see the benefits of keeping your message simple in a small area?
We think anyone strolling or driving-by would immediately know there is a “Sign Company” located in this particular strip mall center. Do you agree?
If you think about it, many businesses are duking-it-out online every day. Battling over high-value keywords like “Signs” or “Hair Salon” or… So why not simply place a ‘keyword’ of what you do, on the small tenant panel, of the pylon sign?
After all, many consumers are typing in keywords online in search of a product, solutions or service… daily. So why not make it easy for them when they’re driving by? Especially… if you’re new small business or an unknown brand?
The main point is if you want to be seen by passersby then make sure what you do or offer is it easy to understand. You can always save the extra goodies such as your store hours, products, services and phone number and easily advertise this information on your nice BIG storefront windows using window graphics. Right?
It’s your choice. You decide which comes first “the logo or your company name” next time you’re renting a new space in a local retail center or strip mall…
If you want help trying to figure out the best way to make better use of your allotted tenant panel (small) pylon sign face area then contacted Signs West of Las Vegas today.
We will be happy to assist you in designing and then making your pylon sign face inserts or change-out graphics that are easily readable. And the more readable… your “what you do or offer” is on the main pylon sign, the better you will be at attracting more consumers looking for what you provide!
Until next month may you discover “which comes first, the logo or company name”.
Just like in a photo above, you will probably start noticing smaller pylon tenant-panel signs that are easy to read and some that make no sense. Because the ones that make no sense are trying to squeeze too much information into a small space that quickly becomes unreadable.
