Hi, ole Larry here with Signs West Las Vegas.

I’ve been living my entire life in the Sign game and I want to share this helpful insider insight for all new businesses looking for signage.

You see, ole Larry was sitting at a traffic light the other day when this broken pylon sign face insert in the photo above caught my eye.

Immediately thinking “Oh here we go again” another amateur hour lesson from the uniformed players of the sign business game.

Why?

For starters, professional sign experts will prefer to walk away from offering plexiglass sign inserts this high up on pylon signs for many a good reason.

Professional sign companies do not want…

  • The liability of a broken sign face.
  • The potential harm if a chunk falls into traffic.
  • A shard injures a customer or passer by.
  • To expose the sign customer to massive liability.

Any one remember when the old massive Hilton Pylon Sign came crashing to earth back in the day?

Thinking right after the big pylon signs failure the sign company realized it was a death knell.

After-all this was a well known A-list sign company yet they were soon out of business.

Damage rained down in the millions.

So what is your point Larry… about the broken chunk of sign in the photo above?

There are a few reasons why this amateur hour pole sign face insert broke.

Reason one. This is a cheaper plexiglass insert and not a more expensive (ideal) shatter-proof lexan sign face insert.

You see, back in the day, plexiglass was the norm for making a sign face inserts out of. [like in the photo above.]

We knew if someone threw a rock with the force of a relief pitchers arm a plexiglass sign face will crack.

No if, and or buts about it.

Yet we knew if we offered the sign customer a thicker more expensive plexiglass face insert it would take much greater force to break.

After-all who wants to keep replacing a sign face insert?

Sure Company A’s bid maybe the low bid at 30% to 40% less then other bids…

However, our bids educate the customer between strength and thickness.

There’s a big difference between 1/8 inch, 3/16 inch and 1/4 inch plexi!

There’s also a proportional increase in cost.

Thus the thinner the plexi the easier the plexiglass will be to break.

Reason two. The most likely culprit of the broken sign face insert in the photo is the cause and effect of temperature change.

The broken sign face above looks like a sign company did not understand plexiglass breathes.

Say what Larry?

In simple terms…

Plexiglass is no different then an element in engineering design or construction.

Elements expand and contract. Sway or bend. Absorb or repel, etc.

Meaning plexiglass expands and contracts with changes in temperature.

Thus let’s assume an amateur sign company eager to make a buck thought they were doing the job correctly by going up and measuring the track spacing (grove channel space between top and bottom along with distance from left to right…) on this pylon sign.

After-all common sense will dictate if the size of the space is 120″ x 60″ and I cut the plexiglass to fit this exact space then the plexiglass will slide right into the sign face?

Sounds logical and simple, right?

WRONG!

Why? Because if this pylon sign face insert was cut to fit the space during the colder months, here in Las Vegas, without taking into consideration plexiglass will EXPAND as temperatures increase … what’s a sign insert, cut to size going to do?

Crack!

Outside temperatures in Las Vegas heat up to 115 degrees plus, however surface temperatures will be a-lot hotter.

As the outside temperate increases the plexiglass molecules get excited and the plexi begins to expand! (Look out below.)

If the plexi sign face insert is cut to fit in a colder month, there is only one outcome which will occur.

The plexiglass will crack because the aluminum or sheet metal pylon sign is not expanding at same rate of the plexi.

Which leads us back to why you want a professional sign company on the job.

As the Sign industry evolves there is no need to utilize plexiglass on outdoor pylon signs.

Now-a-days, the sign industry continues to evolve.

Back in the 1990’s GE introduced a product called Lexan.

Lexan is shatter-proof.

Lexan becomes the ideal replacement for plexiglass.

Especially when lower pylon sign face inserts were closer to the ground.

A rock is not going to break a lexan sign face.

However, as you may have guessed. Lexan cost more then plexiglass.

Yet if Lexan we’re utilized on the pylon sign face insert above the sign would not be cracked.

However, Lexan also breathes

Meaning if inserted is cut to size without allowing for expansion in a colder month the face will be bowing out all around come hotter weather.

You may see examples of signs like this where they appear to be ballooning outward while expanding and becoming convex or concave in appearance.

The liability still exist because now the entire face may have no other choice expect to dislodge. (duck).

If this happens then let’s hope no-one is seriously injured.

Are you able to imagine one giant sheet of lexan flying down to earth?

However if the lexan is cut appropriately to account for expansion in heat then there is not an issues.

No need for a replacement sign face insert or no cracking inserts.

Because pylon pole signs with business name inserts are designed with retainers covering the insert area to account for expansion and contraction!

Done right you’re right… kind of signs.

Plus there are many other modern advances in the sign industry for outdoor pylon signage.

Like giant LED boards to flex faces and more.

However, slide out or slide in lexan sign face inserts are the easiest to change when one accounts for expansion and contraction.

Lexan pole sign face inserts are still the most cost effective way to add your business name on the main center pylon signage.

Yes, lexan cost more then plexiglass however you will only order your pylon sign face inserts once.

Sure you will continue to see many a new pylon sign face being hung from a supper strong lightweight flexible face.

No worries here if one of these flexible seamless faces comes loose because they are lightweight with no sharp edges.

Thus let’s hope this pylon sign face in the photo above gets repaired right away before anyone gets hurts.
